Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Vancouver: Process, Cost & Timeline
June 16, 2026 · All About Floors NW
If your hardwood floors look scratched, dull, or gray, you may not need to replace them. Refinishing restores solid hardwood to like-new condition, usually for a fraction of the cost of new flooring. It’s one of the highest-value upgrades available to older Vancouver, WA and Portland-area homes.
How refinishing works
- Inspection. We confirm your floors are solid wood (or engineered with enough wear layer) and check for damage, cupping, or boards that need repair.
- Sanding. We sand away the old finish and surface wear down to fresh wood.
- Repairs & prep. Gaps, squeaks, and damaged boards are addressed.
- Staining (optional). Change the color or refresh the original tone.
- Sealing. Multiple coats of durable finish protect the wood, important in our damp climate.
How long does it take?
Most refinishing projects take 3–5 days depending on square footage, whether you’re staining, and finish dry/cure times. We’ll give you a precise timeline at your estimate. Plan to stay off the floors while finish cures.
Why refinish instead of replace?
- Cost. Refinishing typically runs a fraction of the cost of installing new hardwood.
- Sustainability. You keep the wood you already have.
- Character. Original old-growth floors in older PNW homes are often higher quality than what’s sold today.
Is your floor a candidate?
Solid hardwood can usually be refinished several times. Engineered hardwood can sometimes be refinished once or lightly, depending on its wear layer. If your floors have deep water damage or have already been sanded very thin, replacement may make more sense, we’ll tell you honestly which path fits.
Dust and disruption
Modern refinishing is far cleaner than it used to be thanks to dust-containment sanding equipment. It’s not 100% dust-free, but it’s a world away from the old days.
