LVP vs. Laminate: Which Is Better for a Rainy Climate? — flooring guidance from All About Floors NW, Vancouver, WA

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and laminate are two of the most popular wood-look floors, and they’re often cross-shopped because they can look almost identical. But in a rainy climate like ours, the difference that matters most is how they handle water.

The core difference: what they’re made of

  • LVP has a waterproof, plastic-based (PVC) core. Water doesn’t damage the plank itself.
  • Laminate has a wood-fiber (HDF) core. Older laminates could swell and ruin if water sat on a seam. Newer water-resistant laminates are much improved, but the core is still wood-based.

Moisture performance

For Pacific Northwest homes, this is the headline:

  • LVP is the safer bet in moisture-prone rooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, entryways, and basements. It’s 100% waterproof at the surface.
  • Laminate works best in drier spaces, living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, especially if you choose a modern water-resistant line.

A note for either floor: “waterproof” refers to the plank surface. Standing water can still get underneath a floating floor at the edges, so wipe up spills promptly and use tile in true wet zones.

Feel, sound, and looks

  • Laminate tends to feel a bit firmer and can sound slightly more hollow without good underlayment. It often shows very crisp, realistic wood embossing.
  • LVP feels a touch softer and warmer underfoot and is quieter, especially rigid-core (SPC) products.

Cost

Both are budget-friendly compared to hardwood. Laminate is often a little less expensive per square foot, while LVP commands a small premium for its waterproof core. See our general flooring cost guide for ranges.

Bottom line for Vancouver-area homes

If moisture is a concern, and in the PNW it usually is, LVP is the more forgiving choice. If you’re flooring a dry, low-risk space and want to stretch your budget, modern water-resistant laminate is a smart option.
