Carpet Installation in Vancouver, WA: What Happens on the Day

Wall-to-wall carpet is the fastest flooring install we do and the one homeowners have the fewest questions about beforehand, which means it’s also the one where the surprises land hardest.

Here’s what actually happens, and what actually drives the price.

Before we arrive

A few days out, someone measures. Carpet comes in 12-foot-wide rolls, so the room dimensions determine how much waste there is and where seams have to land. That layout gets planned before anything is ordered, not on install day.

What we need from you the night before:

• Closets emptied. We move furniture; we don’t move your belongings.
• Dressers and nightstands emptied if they’re heavy when full.
• Electronics disconnected. Unplug and disconnect TVs, computers, and sound equipment.
• Fragile and irreplaceable items moved yourself. Aquariums, pianos, curios, anything with sentimental value.
• Pets arranged for. Doors open all day, loud equipment, and strangers in and out.

Everything else, beds, sofas, dressers, tables, is ours to handle.

The day itself

Old carpet out. The existing carpet is cut into strips, rolled, and carried out along with the old pad. This is the loudest, dustiest hour of the day.

Subfloor check. With the old carpet gone we can see what’s underneath. This is the moment squeaks get found and fixed, and the moment any water damage becomes visible. In older Clark County homes we occasionally find a soft spot near an exterior wall or a bathroom. If that happens, we’ll show you before we cover it.

Tack strip. Thin wood strips with angled pins get fastened around the perimeter. This is what holds the carpet under tension. Old tack strip gets replaced when it’s corroded, which in this climate it sometimes is.

Pad down. Stapled or glued to the subfloor, seams taped.

Carpet in, and stretched. This is the step that separates good installs from bad ones. Carpet has to be power-stretched, not just cut to fit. A power stretcher pulls the carpet tight across the room and hooks it onto the tack strip under real tension. Installers who skip this and use only a knee kicker leave carpet that ripples and buckles within a year or two, and fixing it later means coming back to re-stretch the whole room. Ask any installer you’re considering whether they power-stretch.

Seams. Seams get heat-bonded with seaming tape and an iron. Placement matters more than technique, a seam running perpendicular to a window is visible forever; the same seam placed along the traffic direction, away from direct light, disappears.

Transitions and trim-out. Metal or wood transitions at doorways where the carpet meets hardwood, tile, or vinyl. Edges tucked, doors checked for clearance.

Cleanup and furniture back. Scraps and old material hauled away.

You can walk on it immediately.

Stairs are their own project

Staircases get quoted separately, and the number surprises people. That’s because a staircase isn’t measured in square feet in any meaningful way, it’s a series of individually cut and wrapped pieces, each of which has to be tight, aligned, and consistent with its neighbors. A 14-step staircase is genuinely a half-day of skilled work.

There’s also a choice to make: waterfall (carpet flows over the nose of each tread) or cap-and-band (carpet wraps under the nose and is tacked, following the stair profile). Cap-and-band looks better and costs more.

What drives the price

Roughly in order of impact:

1. Carpet quality and fiber. Nylon costs more than polyester and wears longer. Our guide to choosing fiber, pile, and pad covers this in depth.
2. Pad. Don’t cheap out here. A budget pad under a good carpet crushes early and can void the carpet warranty.
3. Square footage and room shapes. Odd angles and lots of small rooms create waste and more cuts.
4. Stairs. Priced per tread.
5. Removal and disposal of the existing floor.
6. Subfloor repair, when there’s something to fix.

Anything that doesn’t itemize the pad and the disposal is a quote worth questioning. Our cost guide has current ranges, and financing is available if you’d rather spread it out.

One climate note

We’re in a wet region and carpet is the most absorbent floor there is. Two practical implications: put a real entry mat at every exterior door, and treat any water event, an overflowing washer, a slow window leak, as urgent. Carpet and pad that stay wet for more than a day or two are a mold problem rather than a drying problem.

If a room has ongoing moisture, carpet is the wrong material. Luxury vinyl plank belongs there instead.
