Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood for Vancouver, WA Homes — flooring guidance from All About Floors NW, Vancouver, WA

If you want real wood floors in your Vancouver, WA home, you’ll choose between solid and engineered hardwood. Both are genuine wood and both look beautiful, but they’re built differently, and in our climate that difference matters.

How they’re built

  • Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood, typically 3/4” thick. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its life.
  • Engineered hardwood has a real hardwood top layer bonded to a stable plywood core. The cross-layered core resists expansion and contraction.

Climate performance (the deciding factor here)

Wood moves with humidity, and the Pacific Northwest gives wood a lot to react to: damp winters, drier heated indoor air, and humid shoulder seasons.

  • Engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable, so it’s our go-to recommendation for most above-grade rooms and for homes where humidity is harder to control.
  • Solid hardwood is wonderful and endlessly refinishable, but it’s more sensitive to humidity swings and is best paired with steady indoor humidity (around 40–45%).

Neither is ideal for below-grade basements or over concrete slabs without careful moisture management, where LVP or tile is usually the better call.

Refinishing and longevity

Solid wood’s big advantage is longevity: it can be refinished repeatedly, which is why so many older Portland and Vancouver homes still have their original floors. Engineered floors can also be refinished, but only as many times as their wear layer allows, so ask about wear-layer thickness when you shop.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose engineered for stability, wide-plank looks, and most above-grade installs in our climate.
  • Choose solid if you want a floor you can refinish for generations and you can keep indoor humidity steady.
